School fit and learning pathways

The environment is part of the learning picture too.

When a child is struggling at school, the instinct is often to ask what needs to change in the child. A more useful question can be: What is this environment asking this child to manage every day?

Where this fits

School-fit work usually follows a clearer understanding of the learner. We first need to know what the child brings into the environment: their strengths, difficulties, learning profile, current level of coping and the evidence already available. Then we can look at what the school or pathway is asking of them.

The marks can be fine while the child is not

A learner may still be achieving acceptable marks while homework takes hours, weekends are spent recovering, anxiety is increasing or the child is holding themselves together at school and collapsing at home. That does not automatically mean they need to leave. It does mean the cost deserves attention.

Twice-exceptional learners can make school fit complicated

A 2e learner may require advanced academic material and substantial support at exactly the same time. A highly supportive environment may reduce one set of demands but fail to provide enough intellectual challenge. A highly academic environment may provide the stimulation the learner needs while placing unrealistic demands on executive function, pace or output.

Before changing schools

Before making a major move, I want to understand what is actually going wrong. Is the difficulty academic, social, sensory or organisational? Is the learner under-challenged? Are accommodations appropriate but inconsistently implemented? Would an adjustment to the current situation be enough? Staying is also a decision and deserves the same level of thought.

Looking at other pathways

There are cases where exploring something different is the right next question. That could include another mainstream environment, a smaller or more supported school, specialist provision, hybrid learning, a different curriculum or an alternative qualification pathway.

The aim is to understand what the learner will actually be asked to manage there and whether that matches what we now know about them.

The learner should have a voice

Particularly as children get older, I want to know what they experience. They may not be able to identify the educational solution, but they often know which parts of the day are exhausting, where they feel competent, what they dread and what makes learning easier.
